At Prairie Dog Central Railway (PDCR), we don’t just preserve history, we bring it to life. Our vintage steam locomotive, historic coaches, and scenic prairie excursions connect thousands of guests each year to Manitoba’s heritage railway.

Now, as PDCR grows with exciting new themed events, community partnerships, and expanded programming alongside our beloved historical rides, we’re looking for passionate people to help shape the next chapter.

Volunteer for the Scary Dog Central!

For two full weeks, Prairie Dog Central is transforming into Scary Dog Central, with both family-friendly and adult Halloween trains, scare zones, eerie encounters, spooky activities and plenty of unexpected moments designed to make the hair on the back of your neck stand up!

We are very excited to be bringing Halloween back to Warren, and we want YOU to be part of the scare, part of the fun, and part of making it an unforgettable experience! We’re building something truly huge, and we want both new volunteers and our current volunteer crew to be part of it. Whether you’re great at building and decorating, love getting creative, want to dress up and scare some guests, or simply enjoy being part of a great new event and helping people have a fantastic experience, there’s a place for you on our team.

This is about more than bringing the train back to Warren. It’s about bringing people together, creating something special for the community, and welcoming guests to experience Warren this Halloween with us!

To help PDCR run smoothly, safely, and professionally, we ask our volunteers to:

• Be reliable and punctual. Please note that PDCR is not accessible via Winnipeg Transit, as it is located outside the city limits. Volunteers will need to arrange their own transportation
• Treat guests, fellow volunteers, and staff with kindness and respect
• Follow safety procedures and operational guidelines
• Commit to scheduled shifts whenever possible

Volunteer FAQs

Do I need railway experience?

No. Many roles require no prior experience. We provide orientation, training and mentorship to ensure every volunteer is comfortable with their role.

What is the time commitment?

It varies. Some volunteers help occasionally during special events, while others participate regularly throughout the season. Some students may choose to complete their community service hours with us. We are happy to work with your availability.

Is there a minimum age?

Certain roles may have age requirements, especially those related to operations and hospitality. Volunteers aged 15 and older are welcome to apply. Those under 18 must sign a parental or guardian consent/waiver form.

Will I receive training?

Yes. Safety and guest experience are our top priorities, and we ensure volunteers are prepared and supported.

Is this seasonal?

Our busiest season runs during warmer months, but planning, maintenance, and special events occur year-round.
